Tying the Knot: The Ultimate Guide to Modern Handfasting Ceremonies
Are you dreaming of a wedding day that feels entirely authentic, deeply personal, and a little bit magical? If you are looking to step away from rigid box-ticking and instead create an intentional, experience-driven celebration, you are not alone.
As a wedding celebrant at Everlong Ceremonies, I am seeing a massive shift. Couples are rewriting the rules, trading stuffy traditions for unique, nature-inspired wedding days. And at the absolute heart of this modern wedding revolution is one of the world's most beautiful, enduring rituals: the handfasting ceremony.
Whether you are planning a whimsical woodland wedding, a coastal elopement, or a chic micro-wedding, here is everything you need to know about "tying the knot" in the UK.
What is a Handfasting Ceremony?
Though it is trending all over Instagram and TikTok, handfasting is actually an ancient Celtic marriage ritual dating back centuries. Historically, it was used as a public declaration of intent, a commitment where a couple's hands were literally bound together to symbolise their union. In fact, this beautiful ritual is exactly where the phrase "tying the knot" comes from!
Today, modern couples are giving this ancient custom a contemporary twist. During the ceremony, your hands are gently wrapped in cords or ribbons as you exchange your meaningful, personalised vows.
Why is Handfasting Trending?
Modern weddings are all about creating immersive guest experiences and showcasing your unique identity. Handfasting has skyrocketed in popularity because it is 100% customizable. There is no script you have to follow, no strict rules, and no rigid structure.
Here are the three biggest reasons couples are choosing to weave a handfasting ritual into their wedding day:
The Perfect Outdoor Wedding Ritual: Handfasting naturally suits outdoor celebrations. Whether you are surrounded by a wildflower meadow, standing within a historic stone circle, or exchanging vows beneath a canopy of sacred oak trees, it beautifully connects your love story to the natural landscape.
A Way to Involve Loved Ones: Instead of your guests just watching passively, you can invite family members, your bridal party, or even your children forward and place individual ribbons over your hands. It creates an incredibly moving, shared moment.
A Beautiful Keepsake: Unlike words that drift away into the open air, the handfasting cord remains. When tied correctly, you can carefully slip your hands out, leaving the knot perfectly intact, a stunning physical reminder of the promises you made that you can display in your home forever.
Personalising Your Cords: The Magic of Colour Symbolism
One of the most exciting parts of planning your ceremony with Everlong Ceremonies is designing your handfasting cords. You can use tartan to honour family heritage, upcycled fabric from a loved one’s wedding dress, or braided ribbons that match your wedding colour palette.
Many couples choose their ribbon colours based on traditional colour symbolism:
Green - Growth, renewal and a grounded journey
Gold - Warmth, joy, prosperity and bright futures
Blue - Loyalty, trust and calm waters ahead
Red - Courage, passion and deep affection
White - Peace, pure intentions and fresh beginnings
How the Ritual Works (Without the Stress!)
A common worry couples have is: “Will it look clunky? How do we actually tie it without getting tangled?”
Don't worry, that is exactly what I am here for! While there are dozens of ways to loop the fabric, the most popular method keeps things smooth, elegant, and entirely stress-free.
1. The Hand Connection: Step 1.
You stand facing one another and join hands, usually crossing your wrists left-to-left and right-to-right, to form a visual infinity symbol ($ \infty $), representing an endless circle of partnership.
2. The Ribbon Placement: Step 2.
As I share the significance of the ritual with your guests, the ribbons or cords are gently draped across your wrists one by one, either by myself or by your chosen loved ones.
3. The Exchanging of Vows: Step 3.
With your hands comfortably bound, you look into each other's eyes and speak your personalised wedding vows. This literally sets your promises into the binding.
4. Tying the Knot: Optional step.
I will take the ends of the cords and tie a specialised, loose knot underneath your hands. As you pull your hands backwards, the sides of the cord slide together, automatically pulling the knot tight as your hands slip free. This step is optional, as some couples like to stay bound until their first meal together as a married couple.

Your wedding shouldn't feel like anyone else's. It should be a living, breathing reflection of who you are as a couple. Whether you want a full, standalone spiritual handfasting immersed in nature, or you simply want to include a mini hand-tying ritual right after your ring exchange, we can co-create something unforgettable.
Let’s step away from convention and design a day rooted in intention, authenticity, and magic.
