What is a Celebrant?
You may have heard of us, Celebrants, but you may not really understand what we do. So I’ll give you a quick overview, and if you want to know a little more, then feel free to download my “Your Guide to Celebrant-led Ceremonies”.
It’s about who Celebrants are. We are people who love to write and tell a story. We love getting to know couples, listening to their journey together, and learning why they’ve chosen to marry and share their lives. We are happy to celebrate your love with your friends and family by sharing your love story for your ceremony.
But there’s more to it. We don’t just write a story and retell it on the wedding day, as some people think. There’s so much more to Celebrants that meet the eye!
When a couple chooses to have a celebrant-led ceremony and finds their celebrant, we begin a journey together. We get to know the couple in depth, to the point where friendships often form. We discuss ideas, passions and hobbies and how we can incorporate them into the ceremony. When planning your Hampshire wedding, we talk about all things music, films, books, and ways we can incorporate them into the day. Who their ‘special people’ are and how to include them. Whether there are people who cannot make the day, and how we can include them. We work with couples to make their wedding ceremony as creative, romantic, funny, or traditional as they want.
Unique Wedding Rituals: Handfasting, Stone Oathing and More
We are there to help write vows, or write them in full if the couple wants us to. We carry out various ceremony rituals such as the well-known handfasting or the not- so -well -know Stone Oathing or Ring warming. We can even plan fun rituals such as the Shot Unity ritual or even a Cocktail blending ceremony. It’s entirely up to the couple what they’d like to include.
The Difference Between a Celebrant and a Registrar
That’s how we are so much more than a Registrar; we create, we get to know people, we listen, and we also spend time with couples. We have no time constraints, so if your outdoor ceremony in the New Forest or Dorset has a little rainfall just as it's about to start, we can wait 10 mins for it to pass, or if a family member is running late, we can wait until they arrive. Your day is our only prerogative, with only you both in mind.
We also work with other suppliers to ensure everyone is aligned. We meet with the venue on the day of the ceremony. We make sure we know where the ceremony space is and how it’s laid out, and we plan ahead and talk it through with the couple to make sure everyone is happy and calm for the day. We work with wedding planners and photographers, and we usually have great relationships with them, so we become your very own directory.
Is a Celebrant Legally Binding in the UK?
Don’t forget, though, that Celebrant-led ceremonies are not legally binding, just yet. Usually, couples carry out the “legal admin” at a registry office before their special day, so their heartfelt ceremony can be personal and bespoke.
You now have a clearer understanding of who we are and how we can work with all couples, regardless of their ceremony ideas. We love diversity and tradition.
So let’s get planning and let’s find what story we can build together to make your special day the best you’ve imagined. Don’t forget “Your guide to a Celebrant-led Ceremony” if you want to find out more.
